NOVELLA is excited to announce our participation in "SALON ZÜRCHER, NY", featuring the work of Amy Brener and Brian Wood. The art fair coincides with Armory Week and will take place at Zürcher Gallery from March 2nd through March 8th.
Amy Brener’s light sensitive sculptures are compelling for having no identifiable origin, existing somewhere between the geological and the man-made. Crafted from a complex process that involves mixing and pouring resin in several layers, and embedding fragments of technology, Brener’s work is distinctive for its physical power. Her sculptures reward close observation with rich surfaces that appear like cracked, crystallized layers of earthen crust. Their seductive nature doesn’t end there. Slowly moving around them it’s hard not to think of your own body and wonder about its contents, and what mysterious materials it might hold. Brener’s work affirms the body, made of the most ephemeral material, as a unique vessel of shared history, experience, dare one say, shared purpose.
Brian Wood’s work is rooted in the way images arise and function in consciousness. That primal moment right before experience can be described by language. In a recent interview in Gorky’s Granddaughter, Wood describes his work as “a pointer to internal experience in the making”. He addresses being aware of the strangeness we all experience when images come up from memory, or some unknown place, and are just as present as our perceptions. The strange and unknowable serving to drive the act of painting from the “very personal to the very non-personal”. The works on view are a pregnant record of these elusive, ephemeral moments being brought to bear.
